Welcome to a time-travelling journey through some of Scotland’s wildest landscapes, a world of infinite beauty and formidable challenges
Why would anyone – let alone a historian in her sixtieth year – want to spend weeks hiking through some of the most remote parts of the north-west highlands of Scotland carrying a 14kg+ rucksack? But the truth is, more and more of us are taking on such challenges. Or would like to know something about them. The wild places call us, an antidote to our frantic, busy lives.
But here in Scotland such wild places are often not what they seem. Though we love them now for their emptiness, the lack of a human presence, many of them were once home to countless families and even the high tops played their part in the drama of Scotland’s past. So please, join me on one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, training for such a gruelling adventure, researching the history of the places I’ll walk through, and finally taking my first steps on the trail. Sure, it didn’t turn out as I’d expected. But isn’t that the beauty of any journey?
I will put out new posts on Tuesdays and Fridays (I’m cutting us all some slack by doing it twice a week instead of three times) and the newest one shows up here. For all the posts, please click on ‘The Other Side of Wild’ in the main menu. And if there’s a word in the text that you haven’t come across before, it should hopefully be in the glossary
